I thought MP3 was the perfered format for sharing illegal copies of Madonna's latest single, or some other pop music crap out there, not for the archives of High Quality Concert Recordings.

Mp3's on archive.org. I wish that was an oxymoron. Sad day when such a great resource like this pisses on quality.

look at the defination of the word archive:

Date: 1603
: a place in which public records or historical documents are preserved; also : the material preserved -- often used in plural

Preserved is in the defn. of Archive not degraded to an inferior format
